Major Dilemma

Ok…we’ve got some major decisions coming up over the next few months.  This is what we are facing.  Where we are currently living, our school system really sucks.  From what we have been told, that after the kids finish Kindergarten at the school they are attending now, the schools are downhill from there.   We do have several choices for private schools, but with the kind of money Steven is making now, and me not working, there is absolutely NO WAY we can afford it.  And to tell you the truth, I’m not really sure that they even have a decent SPED program for Christopher and Allie, and right now, that’s our top priority.

So this is what’s going on…

We have been looking around at different places that have a good school system and with a good SPED program.  One place we are looking at, is the Gulf Coast, because we’ve heard excellent things about the schools down there, and it would be perfect considering there are many opportunities for jobs in the casino industry.  Even though, Steven is really tired of working in the industry, he has pretty much resigned himself to the fact that is probably the only way he can make the kind of money he wants to make, considering he doesn’t have a degree.  And these days, most places that are hiring are looking for that.

Since it is almost inevitable that we will be moving this summer, should we go ahead and start preparing to sell our house?  Right now, in the town I live in, it’s a seller’s market, and I’m thinking we should jump on that.  There have been 3 houses go up for sell on my street in the past few months, and they have all now sold.  I would say that’s a pretty good sign that we should be able to sell our house fairly quickly.  I just don’t want to be forced to try to move and sell our house all at once.

So I could really used some advice on this, if anyone has any suggestions or feedback.  It would be greatly appreciated and welcomed.

Putting A Halt On Moving

We’ve decided to stop pursuing a move until next summer.  We are going to let the kids finish the school year here, then we will actively start looking for a better place to live.  That will give us time to really research where we think Christopher will benefit the most.  Right now, he is our most important priority.  Allie should do fine, we have had a few issues with speech delay, but now, that is almost nonexistent.  The school they are in right now is really great, and we are very pleased with how they have handled Christopher and his needs.

Hectic Week

The kids started school this week.  Christopher is having a slight tough time adjusting.  His second day went much better.  He had issues with the music they played during their “rest time”.  But the next day, they didn’t play the music and he actually laid still for a few minutes, and that is VERY uncharacteristic of him.  Allie is totally loving it.  At this particular school, they help the 3 year olds with “potty training”, and we had been having problems, so that’s going to help us out so much!

The job on the coast fell through.  My husband called Monday to confirm the audition and asked some questions regarding hours and they couldn’t commit to a set number of hours per week, so he had to pass.  It just wasn’t worth his time and money to drive down there not knowing how many hours he would be getting.

On a lighter note, he received call from another casino in North Mississippi.  They want to interview him for a Supervisor’s position, which would be a step up, and a set salary instead of an hourly position.  The schools in this area are very good too, so he’s heading up Tuesday.  The town where we would live is just right outside Memphis, TN, so we would have access to a lot of neat places to shop and fun things for the kids to do.  And we are familiar with the area, because we lived there for 2 years before we moved down here in 1999.

I think I am just ready for a change.  I’m very unsatisfied with our house, it’s falling apart, and we don’t have the money to fix it up.  I think we are going to rent for a little while before we try to buy a house again.  We really need to clean up our credit record before we do it again anyway.

Moving Becoming A Reality

My husband got a call the other day from one of the BEST casinos on the Gulf Coast, The Beau Rivage.  They want him to come in on Tuesday for an audition.  We are heading down that way on Monday, stopping on the way at a friend’s house to spend the night, then heading down first thing Tuesday morning to take a look around before he goes to his interview/audition.

We are so excited!  We have heard such wonderful things about the schools down there, and right now that is our main concern, plus my husband will be making TONS more.  So that helps too.  I have decided to go with him, because I want to see how things look down there.  I know that it isn’t perfect yet, but I have heard that they have made a lot of progress since Katrina.

Also, I think I am really ready for a change.  We have been here in my home town for over 8 years now, and we just really don’t see a future for our kids here.  It’s such a small town, and there is nothing here for them to do.  I have been looking at housing, which is quite a bit more than here, but he should be making more money, so it should even out.

As soon as we get back, I’ll post an update on how things went….Wish us luck!!!
