The Mississippi River Flood of 2008

And we are smack dab in the middle of it. Well…fortunately it will not affect our home, because the town I live in is on a bluff overlooking the river. But my husband works for a casino river boat that had to be closed indefinitely as of 3AM this morning. And to be honest, he’s not all that broken up about it. The casino has agreed to pay all of their employees (even the average tips) during their time off, without having to use leave time. He said that when they let everyone go this morning, that it was like a bunch of kids on the last day of school, getting out for the summer! Everyone had their music turned up when they were leaving the parking lot and honking their horns. LOL

We are looking at this as being able to spend time together as a family. It’s been really hard since I’ve become a SAHM. My husband had to go from working 8 to 5 as a payroll coordinator for the casino to a Table Games Dealer/Supervisor simply because they make more money and we needed it. Now, he works late hours and sleeps all day, and the kids hardly ever see him. He hates it, I hate it, the kids hate it. We’ve also got plans to do some painting in the house as well. I’m really excited! We are really excited! ;) He was telling all his co-workers that I’ve got a list of “Honey Dos” for him when he gets home. And he’s right, I do! HAHA!!

Here’s some pictures of the casino and the flood, the first picture is what the road looked like about a 2 weeks ago, and the second one is what it looked like about a week ago. Of course now, it’s tons worse.  Click to make larger.

Edited: I just want to make sure that everyone knows that I am completely aware of how serious flooding can be.  Homes and lives can be lost.  I, in no way, want anyone to think that my husband and I are not concerned about what’s happening to the areas that are affected by this situation.  Fortunately, because of where we live, we are being spared, but the town across the river from us is really starting to feel the affects of this.  While, although, he will be off from work, he will be volunteering his time to helping anyone who is in need.  Just wanted to make that clear and wanted to make sure that I didn’t come across as not caring about what’s going on.

OMG. I am glad you will be spared, but I feel for all the others who are not. It does seem like we have more flooding in the past year.

Wow! I guess this is a blessing in disguise kind of thing for your family. My husband worked a job a couple years ago that kept him from spending hardly any time with us. It was hard but we made it through. I hope you enjoy this time together.

OMG! I had no idea! Isn’t it just about Pilgrimage time?

Please keep me posted. We have tentative plans to visit there within the next few weeks.

‘Honey Do’s’ - that’s sooo cute!!
