World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD)

As many of you may know, I have a 6 year old son that was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder in March of last year. Since his diagnosis, my son has been attending 2 Occupational Therapy sessions and 2 Speech Therapy sessions per week. I can definitely say that he has made tons of progress over the past year. He is doing very well in Kindergarten, learning math, and learning to read. Many of the characteristics related to his disorder, I can honestly say, have completely diminished.

I received an email from Autism Speaks, that I would like to share. Today, April 2nd, marks the very first World Autism Awareness Day. Which I think is very exciting! Here’s the email, and I hope that it inspires some of you to take action in your own community.

Be a Part of the Global Autism Speaks Community
By Participating in Autism Awareness Month!

April 2nd marks the first ever World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD).This global event kicks off a vast array of activities in celebration of April being Autism Awareness Month. From the United Nations briefing in New York on April 2nd to the Autism Awareness Jamboree in India that same day or to the end of the month at Walk Now for Autism Los Angeles on the 26th, the global autism community is taking action in the fight against autism.

While most of the larger events take place in major metropolitan areas, we know the difference each local community can make. After all, our grassroots efforts in more than 70 cities last year funded over $33 million of autism research.

We are excited to provide an opportunity in which everyone, everywhere can participate. For the month of April, Autism Speaks’ Virtual Walk Now for Autism will give you the tools and resources to reach out across your community and invite them to join your efforts.

To begin, log on to the Autism Speaks website and click on the logo for Virtual Walk Now for Autism (you may also go to www.walknowforautism.org/virtualwalk .) Next, click on ‘Register,’ then ‘Start a Team.’ You can then name your team after a child, family, or, company, for example. Or, as a great way to create awareness, increase understanding, and provide support to those that are affected in your local area, name it after your community.

Whether your team raises $500 or $5,000, your local efforts will have a global impact on this very special occasion. Join us and thousands of Autism Speaks supporters across the nation and beyond, as we fight to bring one strong voice to all those affected by autism!

I will be walking for Autism this summer as I have done before.

That’s great Jenn! :)

That’s wonderful that your son is making such great progress, Ruthie! I hope he continues to do well. :) It must be very challenging, I’m sure. I can’t even imagine. I bet us parents who don’t have an autistic child really have no idea what it’s like, no matter how many articles we have read or what we have seen on TV about it. I’m glad to hear that your son is doing well in school, though. :)

BTW–step by my blog when you get a chance and check out my “Sweet Surprise” post…there’s a little something I want you to see there… :)

I know way more people with autistic kids than I ever thought I would. They all work like dogs to get their children as many opportunities as possible. Their dedication is awe inspiring.

Thanks so much guys for the wonderful comments!! :)

David Archuleta…

If you don’ t watch American Idol , you’ re not interested in this. If you do watch American Idol, you’ re probably only marginally interested in my take on the top 10….
